01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Fiksu was a Boston-based mobile app marketing platform founded in 2008 by Micah Adler as Fluent Mobile, rebranding to Fiksu ('smart' in Finnish) in 2011. It pivoted from a news app to data-driven tools that lowered the cost of mobile app user acquisition, offering programmatic media buying, campaign optimization, and audience targeting — plus FreeMyApps, an incentivized app-discovery product with 1.6 million monthly users. Fiksu reached more than $100 million in annual revenue in 2014 and worked with 40 of the 50 top-grossing apps in the Apple App Store in 2013; its Fiksu Indexes became an industry benchmark for install costs. After abandoning IPO plans and laying off staff, it was acquired by asset management firm Noosphere on June 3, 2016 (folded into ClickDealer) and later split into four companies.
02 / Fiksu FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors
Fiksu borrowed heavily to pre-buy inventory; as incented-install demand and business slowed (Apple crackdown; FB/Google competition), debt kept the company afloat until Bridge Bank called the loan and effectively controlled assets sold to Noosphere—an “ugly bank takeover” per a source (Fiksu disputed that framing).
Bridge Bank/SVB-style borrowing; bank called loan and controlled assets at sale.
Incentivized install market deteriorated after Apple crackdowns; business slowed.
CEO cited competitive pressure; Morgan Stanley note on FB/Google ad dollars.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Acquisition
described Noosphere’s early-June 2016 acquisition of Fiksu as “likely as part of a fire sale”; prior 6 Jun piece said Bridge Bank owned assets and sold to Noosphere after calling the loan (“ugly bank takeover”).
