01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Voly was a Sydney-based instant grocery delivery startup founded in July 2021 by Mark Heath and Thibault Henry. It operated its own micro-fulfilment centres with fully employed riders and staff, promising grocery delivery in 15 minutes or less at retail prices. The company raised A$18 million (about US$13 million) in a December 2021 seed round led by Sequoia Capital India, then the largest seed round for an Australian food-delivery company.

02 / Voly Australia FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Voly's capital-intensive quick-commerce model could not survive the 2022 funding pullback. Co-founder Thibault Henry said sudden macro shifts, unstable geopolitics and high inflation made attracting new capital 'extremely difficult' despite existing investors' support. Although stores were profitable individually, the company lacked the runway to reach overall profitability and halted operations in November 2022.
