Dash
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Dash was a Ghanaian fintech startup founded in 2019 by Prince Boakye Boampong to make sending money across Africa simple and efficient, guaranteeing interoperability between mobile money wallets and bank accounts across the continent. The company raised $86.1 million over five years from investors including Insight Partners, Global Founders Capital, 4DX Ventures and ASK Capital, with a $32.8 million seed round in 2021 that was the second-largest ever for an African startup at the time.
02 / Dash FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Dash collapsed after fraud and financial impropriety at the top. In February 2023, the board suspended CEO Prince Boakye Boampong following an investigation into misreporting; internal audits showed he had inflated user numbers - Dash had claimed $1 billion in transaction volume from a million users in five months, numbers that could not be verified in the real world. Auditors found at least $25 million missing from company accounts, and Boampong was alleged to have diverted at least $8 million for property and luxury cars while drawing a $50,000 monthly salary from a company with no tangible revenue. Interim CEO Kenneth Kinshua found monthly burn above $500,000 and an unrecoverable financial hole, leaving shutdown as the only option.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
In February 2023, Dash's board suspended founder-CEO Prince Boakye Boampong amid reports of exaggerated metrics, and placed him on indefinite administrative leave pending a financial audit.
- 02
The audit revealed inflated user numbers and at least $25 million missing from the company's accounts; Boampong was fired and replaced by interim CEO Kenneth Kinshua.
- 03
In October 2023, Dash announced it was winding down and laid off its remaining 70+ staff, eight months after the founder's suspension.
- 04
No bankruptcy filing was reported; the company was wound down after investor capital was exhausted and could not be raised again. The reported $25 million shortfall was an alleged misappropriation, not a disclosed audited loss, so no loss amount is recorded.
