Borgward China
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Borgward China was the Chinese revival of the historic German Borgward car brand, launched in 2014 when truck maker Foton Motor bought the trademark rights and relaunched it as a light passenger-car marque for the Chinese market. Its BX3, BX5, BX6 and BX7 gasoline crossovers were built in Foton's Beijing factory, with first SUVs going on sale in 2016–2017.
02 / Borgward China FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Borgward died of brand irrelevance: too expensive for mass-market Chinese buyers, too unknown for premium segments, and lacking the tech innovation of new EV leaders. It lost 4 billion yuan between 2016 and 2018; Foton then sold 67% to UCAR in 2019, but no new model ever followed. The pandemic crushed production, sales fell to 3,600 in 2021, and the company lost 4.7 billion yuan — about $676 million — that year alone, more than all 2016–2018 losses combined.
