AllHere
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
AllHere was a Boston-based education technology company founded in 2016 by Joanna Smith-Griffin. It built AI-powered chatbots and communication software to fight chronic student absenteeism, texting families before students missed school. Its highest-profile project was Ed, an AI chatbot built for the Los Angeles Unified School District under a contract worth up to $6 million over five years, launched in March 2024. In June 2024 the company furloughed most of its staff and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.
02 / AllHere FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
AllHere's financial collapse came fast and left almost no public explanation. Despite raising $12 million in venture capital and landing a $6 million, five-year contract with the second-largest school district in the United States, the company furloughed the vast majority of its employees on June 14, 2024, citing its financial situation, and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy weeks later. The district terminated the relationship and shut down the Ed chatbot within months of its launch. In the fall of 2024, federal prosecutors arrested founder and former CEO Joanna Smith-Griffin on charges of defrauding investors of nearly $10 million by misrepresenting the company's revenue and customers — she has pleaded not guilty. Whatever the outcome of the case, the company had burned through its capital and its marquee contract before either could sustain it.

The 74 (12 Sep 2024) reports AllHere announced in June 2024 it was in financial distress and furloughed most employees (LA Times later quoted the site: Board furloughed the majority on 14 Jun 2024), then filed a liquidation bankruptcy petition in mid-August 2024 in Delaware. PACER/CourtListener show AllHere Education, Inc., case 24-11841-LSS, filed 13 Aug 2024; remaining staff preparing to wind the company down.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
A marquee contract is not a business model: $6 million over five years cannot carry a company burning venture capital.
- 02
When the founder is the revenue story, verify the revenue story.
- 03
School-district sales cycles are long and political; a single flagship deal concentrates existential risk.
- 04
Furloughing most staff within weeks of a flagship launch is the market telling you the math never worked.
