OneSmart Edu China
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
OneSmart Education China refers to the mainland operating business of OneSmart International Education Group, founded in Shanghai in 2008 and listed on the New York Stock Exchange. It ran a premium K-12 after-school tutoring network - centered on the OneSmart VIP personalized tutoring business plus HappyMath, FasTrack English and OneSmart Online - reaching 480 learning centers across China by August 2020.
02 / OneSmart Edu China FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
The mainland business was wiped out by China's July 2021 'double reduction' policy, which forced after-school tutoring firms in compulsory subjects to become nonprofit and banned for-profit学科 tutoring entirely. OneSmart suspended all mainland education programs and learning centers in October 2021, leaving prepaid tuition unrefunded and employees unpaid. Its balance sheet was already fragile: as of February 2021 it carried RMB 2.73 billion in customer prepayments and total liabilities of about RMB 7.45 billion, and it had been fined in June 2021 for false advertising and pricing fraud.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Peak footprint
OneSmart's China network reached 480 learning centers; its fiscal-2021 second-quarter results showed RMB 2.73 billion in customer prepayments and roughly RMB 7.45 billion in total liabilities.
- Crackdown
In July 2021 China's 'double reduction' regulations required tutoring institutions to register as nonprofits, banned foreign ownership and prohibited capital raising for the sector; OneSmart warned of a material adverse impact.
- Suspension
In October 2021 OneSmart's board approved suspending all of its education programs and learning centers in mainland China; parents and employees demanded refunds and unpaid wages at its headquarters, per Caixin and EL Gazette reporting.
