Honestbee
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
honestbee was a Singapore on-demand e-grocery startup founded in 2015 by Joel Sng, Isaac Tay and Jonathan Low. It matched shoppers with personal concierges to deliver groceries from supermarkets, then expanded beyond grocery into food delivery, laundry and concierge services, reaching eight Asian countries including Taiwan and Japan. It attracted investors including Mitsubishi Corporation and — by October 2018 — opened a physical grocery and food store, "habitat by honestbee", in Singapore. It raised about $75 million.
02 / Honestbee FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
honestbee collapsed under founder-driven financial mismanagement and unsustainable burn. Co-founder and CEO Joel Sng treated company funds as his own — lavish personal purchases, undisclosed payments to shell companies he created — and was ousted in May 2019 after the company ran into a cash crisis, burning roughly US$5-6 million a month. New management (Ong Lay Ann, then Brian Koo's circle) tried a debt-moratorium, a creditor haircut scheme and even a pizza-joint pivot, but the Singapore High Court rejected protection in March 2020 as backers reconsidered amid COVID-19. The company was placed under liquidation in July 2020, still owing about S$319.9 million to staff, vendors and creditors; Joel Sng was later made bankrupt by a Singapore court.
