twitapps
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
TwitApps was a set of free Twitter utility applications built by solo developer Stuart Dallas. He made them as a personal technical exercise, but after early blog coverage the apps attracted around 4,000 active users and kept growing. The service ran as a free side project alongside Dallas's full-time job and contracting work, and it was never turned into a business: it shut down on September 13, 2009.
02 / twitapps FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors supported by the current evidence
The developer could not keep rebuilding the service while repeatedly fixing failures caused by changes to Twitter's API.
Repeated Twitter API changes created ongoing repair work that the developer could not sustain.
