Underground Cellar
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Underground Cellar was a San Francisco wine e-commerce company founded by Jeff Shaw. Members bought wine from themed collections that could be upgraded to higher-value bottles at no extra cost, and stored up to 500 bottles for free in its temperature-controlled CloudCellar in Napa Valley, shipping them whenever they wanted. At its peak it served over 50,000 customers and reported more than $20 million in annual revenue.
02 / Underground Cellar FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
The company never made money after years of operating and kept betting on the next funding round to survive. In April 2023 a lender called in an $8 million loan, the company halted operations on April 24 and filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy on May 1, 2023. It owed nearly $25 million in wine and other debts, and $2.7 million of customer orders had never reached its warehouse. The company cited market headwinds and an inability to secure follow-on financing; customers accused it of running a sham and sued over undelivered wine.
