JUCR
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
JUCR was a Berlin-based e-mobility startup founded by Richard Birich, Max Grollmann and Lukas Puls, offering Europe's 'densest charging network for electric cars': 333,000 charging points accessible for a single €29.99/month subscription through its smartphone app with built-in maps — the 'Netflix of EV charging.' It developed proprietary technology including the JUCR Charge Point Protocol with bidirectional charging, plug-in-charge and over-the-air updates, and aimed to deliver 100,000 internally developed charging stations by 2025. It raised €1.5 million in pre-seed funding in February 2022 and closed a €32.2 million financing round in November 2022 (€6.2M seed plus €25M debt) backed by Vector Venture Capital, 2bX and German Media Pool.
02 / JUCR FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors
Electrive reports JUCR's charging flat-rate was never profitable because of rising roaming prices and heavy users; after switching to volume packages then to per-kWh billing in Nov 2023, the company lost many customers — context given in the insolvency report.
