01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Niutron (牛创新能源) was a Chinese electric-vehicle startup founded by Li Yinan — the former Huawei vice president, Baidu CTO, and founder of electric-scooter maker Niu Technologies. Headquartered in Beijing with R&D and manufacturing in Changzhou, it built its first model, the Niutron NV, a large crossover offered as both a pure electric vehicle and an extended-range plug-in hybrid, priced at RMB 278,800–318,800. It raised an RMB 500 million Series A led by IDG Capital and Coatue Management. After its October 2022 launch gathered 24,376 orders, the company could not deliver a single vehicle and refunded all reservation holders in December 2022.

02 / Niutron FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Niutron's failure was a manufacturing-qualification failure, not a product failure. The company had no production credentials of its own and relied on its contract manufacturing partner Dorcen Automobile — but Dorcen's Changzhou plant had been shut down since 2020, and under Chinese regulations a factory idle for 24+ months must be re-verified before restarting, which Dorcen could not secure. Niutron never disclosed details, citing only 'its own reasons,' but media reported the qualification issue as the cause. Two months after launch, all 24,376 orders were refunded within 48 hours. Founder Li Yinan was said to be seeking new production partners into early 2023, but no vehicle was ever delivered.
