inq
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
INQ was a London-based phone maker backed by Hutchison Whampoa, founded in 2007. Its INQ1 (2008) was one of the first Facebook-integrated phones. In 2013 it stopped making handsets to focus on social software; operations ceased January 31, 2014.
02 / inq FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
INQ could not compete with larger smartphone manufacturers despite early success with social-feature phones. It pivoted to social software in January 2013, launching the Material news reader and the SO.HO social aggregator, but the apps never really caught on. Parent Hutchison Whampoa concluded the technology had greater application within the wider group and shut INQ down on January 31, 2014.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
One differentiating feature (Facebook integration) is not a moat against hardware giants.
- 02
A pivot must find traction fast when the core hardware business is gone.
- 03
When a parent sees more value in the assets than in the business, the end is near.
- 04
Support existing device owners through the wind-down.
