Royole Corporation
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Royole Corporation was a Shenzhen-based manufacturer of flexible displays and sensors founded in 2012 by Stanford engineering graduates led by Bill Liu. Once valued at roughly $8 billion, it produced fully flexible displays from a 4.5-million-square-foot quasi-G6 mass-production campus in Shenzhen and made the world's first foldable smartphone. It had offices in Fremont, Hong Kong and Shenzhen, and backers including IDG Capital, AMTD Group and Knight Capital.
02 / Royole Corporation FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Royole's unconventional, self-developed manufacturing technology produced flexible screens that no major smartphone maker wanted to buy, leaving its giant Shenzhen fab underutilized. After scrapping its STAR Market IPO plans in 2021, the company's cash crunch deepened: it defaulted on employee wages from November 2022, prompting worker protests, and fell behind with suppliers. Court filings showed debts of over 4.7 billion yuan, more than 30 billion yuan in court executions, and combined salary arrears of 160 million yuan. The Shenzhen court accepted bankruptcy petitions in 2024.
