Booktopia
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Booktopia was Australia's largest online bookstore, founded in 2004. It sold books, eBooks and DVDs to five million customers, at its peak selling a book every 3.9 seconds. The company listed on the Australian Securities Exchange in December 2020 with a market capitalisation of $315.8 million and posted record profits during the Covid pandemic, overtaking Amazon in Australian online book market share by 2021. After over-expanding into an automated Sydney warehouse, it collapsed with debts of around $60 million, entered voluntary administration on July 3, 2024, and was bought by the digiDirect Group in August 2024, which resumed trading.
02 / Booktopia FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Booktopia was undone by mistimed expansion. Riding the Covid book-buying boom, it poured money into a highly automated customer fulfilment centre at Strathfield in Sydney and doubled its warehouse space, just as book sales slumped back after the pandemic. Competition from Amazon intensified, operating costs rose, and the warehouse costs inflicted heavy losses - a net loss of $16.7 million in the six months to December 2023. Liquidity dried up, cost-cutting and redundancies failed to save it, and the company entered voluntary administration with debts of about $60 million.
