01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Lanyrd (named after 'lanyard') was a London-based conference directory website created by Simon Willison and Natalie Downe and launched in 2010 (the idea was first hacked together on their honeymoon in Casablanca). Users logged in via the Twitter API; the site compiled blog posts, photos and coverage from events organized by session and speaker, and showed which of a user's Twitter contacts were attending. It launched an iOS app in 2011, raised $1.4 million in seed funding in September 2011, and went through the Y Combinator incubator.
