Wikimart
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Wikimart was a Moscow-based Russian online marketplace founded in the summer of 2008 by Maxim Faldin and Kamil Kurmakaev. It aggregated about 8,000 online stores offering roughly 2 million goods across consumer electronics, home appliances and apparel, with professional merchants selling to consumers. Backed by Tiger Global Management (which held a 50% stake), Earlybird and others, it raised about $82.6 million in total - one of the most heavily Western-funded Russian e-commerce companies of its era.
02 / Wikimart FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Wikimart never achieved profitability. After 2014, geopolitical risk following the Ukraine conflict led Western investors - notably Tiger Global - to pull back funding, a critical blow. The company made strategic missteps, including acquiring loss-making assets like Terminal.ru and Mallstreet.ru, and a 2015 pivot to an 'online commercial and entertainment center' under new general manager Andrey Klenin that failed as key executives left. The 2016 bankruptcy of its banking partner Finprombank shattered its finances; salaries stopped being paid on time and debts to suppliers, contractors and landlords mounted. In December 2016, co-founder Maxim Faldin declared the company dead after finding offices sealed and 'everything lost or stolen'.
