01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Bunch was a Montreal-based social platform for topic-based discussion, co-founded and led by CEO Andrew Sider. Instead of connecting people around friends, it organized online conversation around shared passions: users signed in with Facebook and joined up to three 'bunches' - topic communities like baking or tattoos - with features such as a minimum comment length to encourage substantive, civil discussion. It launched publicly in June 2013 with an iPhone app after a closed beta of about 20,000 users who had created over 50 communities, and raised $1 million from Real Ventures, 500 Startups, BDC Venture Capital, Round13 Capital and angel investors.
