Derby Stars
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Derby Stars was a blockchain horse-racing metaverse game built by HypeDream, described as the first AAA free-to-play game on the Polygon blockchain. Players could own, breed, train and trade unique racehorse NFTs composed of more than ten customizable body parts, racing in player-versus-environment and player-versus-player modes under a dual-token economy with the DSRUN governance token and the CRT utility token. After raising $6 million, the game shut down on April 7, 2025.
02 / Derby Stars FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors supported by the current evidence
Official 24 Mar 2025 PD letter by Ham Seon-woo (CEO of Hypedream / PD of Derby Stars): after the May 2022 Terra crisis wiped NFT sales revenue and one-third of seed capital, the Polygon launch was incomplete; later IR rounds failed and financial performance fell short, so services were terminated.
Terra crisis in early May 2022 caused loss of 100% of NFT sales revenue and one-third of seed investment overnight.
Second and third IR rounds were unsuccessful, leaving no choice but to terminate services.
Budget damage forced an incomplete launch (missing land/buildings), which underperformed and led to cutting three-quarters of the team.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Product or service closed

Difficulty of rebuilding this project today
Material for this section is being gathered and checked. It will appear here once ready.
Overall assessment: Not completed
05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Do not build your treasury on someone else's chain: the 2022 Terra crash wiped out Derby Stars' NFT revenue and a large part of its seed funding.
- 02
Play-to-earn economies need durable demand for the game itself, not just the tokens.
- 03
Relaunching on Polygon and planning a move to Immutable could not fix the underlying funding and user-growth gap.
- 04
When prolonged financial difficulty sets in, shut down cleanly and tell the community why.
