Subspace
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Subspace was a Los Angeles-based real-time internet infrastructure startup founded in 2018 by Bayan Towfiq (a serial entrepreneur who had sold his previous company Flowroute to West/Intrado) and CTO William King (a real-time communications expert). It built a combination of software and hardware that created a 'parallel internet' - routing around problem traffic to create fast lanes for gaming companies, so players got a faster experience. Its products included SIP, WebRTC, application acceleration, and load balancing, targeting gaming, real-time video, and sports betting; customers included gaming companies such as FunPlus. The company raised $26 million and hired a rockstar team from Riot Games, SpaceX, Google, and Akamai. It shut down on May 13, 2022.
02 / Subspace FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Subspace's founder said the company's ability to execute faltered due to financial constraints: building a parallel internet - proprietary software plus hardware deployed worldwide - required more capital than the $26 million raised could sustain. The bet was that Web 3.0 and the metaverse would demand better connectivity than the public internet, but that demand never materialized in time to support the business. A capital-intensive infrastructure play without a matching revenue ramp left it unable to continue.
