Huohua Siwei
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Huohua Siwei (火花思维, Spark Education/Spark Thinking) was a Beijing-based online education platform founded in 2016 by Jian Luo. It offered live, gamified small-group classes (typically 4–8 students) in math, logic, Chinese and English for children aged 3–12, with AI-powered adaptive learning paths. It raised about $593 million from Tencent, GGV Capital, KKR, Sequoia China, IDG Capital, Yuanfudao and Kuaishou, and was valued at $1.5 billion after its January 2021 Series E3.
02 / Huohua Siwei FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
China's July 2021 double-reduction policy banned for-profit tutoring in core school subjects, wiping out the K-12 online tutoring model overnight. Huohua Siwei's planned Nasdaq listing (filed earlier in 2021) was abandoned, and the company — which had burned through nearly all of its $593 million in funding — wound down its tutoring business and ended 2021 as a failed startup.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Do not build the whole company on one regulatory permission: double-reduction killed K-12 for-profit tutoring in one stroke.
- 02
Raise or list before the window closes; Huohua's IPO filing and $1.5B valuation arrived months before the policy wipeout.
- 03
When the core model dies, decide fast: burning through $593M without a pivot left nothing to salvage.
