Guvera
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Guvera, founded on Australia's Gold Coast in 2008 by Darren Herft, Claes Loberg and Brad Christiansen, was an ad-funded music streaming service promising free, legal music paid for entirely by advertisers. Billed as an 'iTunes killer', it beat Spotify to launch in Australia and the US, signed deals with all four major labels, expanded to 20 countries, and at its peak claimed 17 million users after raising about $180 million from some 3,000 investors. It began as an MP3 site in 2010 and evolved into a licensed streaming service with ad-based and premium tiers.
02 / Guvera FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Guvera's collapse was driven by unsustainable losses, and the blocking of its planned $80 million Australian IPO sealed its fate. A June 2016 prospectus revealed a $81.1 million loss in the financial year ended June 30, 2015, prompting the Australian Securities Exchange to reject the IPO; the company placed two subsidiaries into administration and agreed a deed of company arrangement paying creditors $180,000 a month. Founder Darren Herft stepped down as CEO in July 2016, co-founder Claes Loberg and key investor Steven Porch later walked away, and the service wound down across all markets, shutting everything by May 2017. Australian securities regulators opened a federal investigation into the company in 2017.
