01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Invact Metaversity was an Indian edtech startup founded in December 2021 by Manish Maheshwari, former head of Twitter India, and Tanay Pratap, a former Microsoft executive and popular educator. It aimed to build a metaverse-based university offering employability-focused training, starting with a 16-week 'metaMBA' priced at ₹2 lakh, to help students secure jobs at high-growth tech companies. In February 2022 it raised $5 million at a $33 million valuation from Arkam Ventures, Antler India, Picus Capital and others. In May 2022 the company cancelled its first cohort, refunding students with interest, after irreconcilable differences between the co-founders; Maheshwari left and Pratap took over to rebuild it as 'Invact 2.0'.

02 / Invact Metaversity FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

The metaverse classroom never reached the quality the founders had promised: testing showed the immersive classroom and community experience were not being delivered at the envisioned level, and accessibility on students' devices posed ecosystem challenges. The two founders also disagreed fundamentally on whether they were an education company or a metaverse company. A sale attempt failed to find a buyer. In May 2022 the first batch was cancelled, about 20 employees were laid off, and Maheshwari left; Pratap stayed on to rebuild.
