01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

BricaBox was a New York Silicon Alley startup founded by Nate Westheimer that let users create their own social content sites for free - described as a mash-up's mashup, a blend of blog, wiki, mapping, tagging, community and widgets. It came out of alpha in March 2008, just before the founder took it to South by Southwest. The service was shut down later that year, and its code was open-sourced on Google Code.

02 / BricaBox FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

The founder said the decision to close BricaBox revolved around the four essentials of a successful startup - money, traction, team and vision - and that the company was left with good quantities of only one of them. A startup deserves to live if it has at least three of the four; BricaBox no longer did.
