01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Standard Cyborg was a Y Combinator-backed prosthetics startup founded in 2015 by Jeff Huber, an engineer and life-long amputee. Its first product was the 'Water Leg' - a 3D-printed waterproof backup prosthetic leg for showering, swimming, and walking on shorelines, sold for under $500 (a fraction of the $5,000-plus cost of conventional custom legs). The company later shifted to software with Design Studio, a platform letting clinicians 3D-scan a patient's limb with an iPad-mounted scanner and design custom-fit prosthetic or orthotic geometry, 3D-printed and shipped to the clinic within hours. No shutdown or failure announcement for the company was found.
