01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Hujiang (沪江) was a Shanghai-based online education platform founded in 2001 by Fu Cairui, starting as a BBS and growing into one of China's largest digital education companies. It offered online language and professional courses, including the CCtalk learning community, and by end-2017 had 170 million registered users with over 140 million on mobile. It raised $187 million across four rounds since 2009 (last a $157 million Series D in October 2015, with Baidu co-founder Li Yanhong among investors) and became internet education's first unicorn in 2015.

02 / Hujiang FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Hujiang never turned its huge user base into a sustainable business: its 2017 loss widened to 537 million yuan on 555 million yuan of revenue, driven by rising admin, sales and R&D costs, and its Hong Kong IPO (filed July 2018) never completed. In March 2019 it laid off roughly 1,000 employees across business units and corporate functions while reorganizing loss-making businesses. Then China's 2021 double-reduction crackdown on for-profit tutoring destroyed the sector's economics, and Hujiang — already hollowed out — was reported as failed.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN

How the factors connect

  1. 01

Users are not revenue: Hujiang had 170 million registered users in 2017 but still posted a loss almost equal to its revenue.

  2. 02

Get to profitability before the window closes; its IPO filing in 2018 came too late and the listing never happened.

  3. 03

Avoid betting on policy-sensitive sectors without a non-tutoring fallback; the 2021 double-reduction crackdown killed the whole industry.
