fluent
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Fluent (fluent.io) was a webmail service that made Gmail look and feel like the Sparrow email client. It wrapped Gmail in a slicker interface with instant search, conversation-style discussions, support for multiple accounts and task tracking, aiming to reinvent how people handled email.
02 / fluent FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Fluent ran out of runway and could not raise enough funding to continue; being based in Australia put it far from most venture capital. The deeper problem was the market itself: nobody wants to pay for an email client when email is free, which is why Sparrow sold to Google instead of surviving alone. The founders turned down acqui-hire offers and shut the service down in August 2012.
