01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Tempo Automation Holdings (Nasdaq: TMPO) was a San Francisco electronics manufacturer founded in 2013 by Jeff McAlvay, Jesse Koenig and Shashank Samala. Its software-driven factory produced printed circuit board assemblies for low-volume manufacturing and prototyping, serving aerospace, medical, automotive and industrial customers. Total financing reached $353.6 million, including $74.6 million in venture rounds plus a $200 million convertible note and $79 million post-IPO debt around its November 2022 SPAC listing.

02 / Tempo Automation FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Tempo never scaled after going public: it reported gross revenue of just $10.9 million against a net loss of $144.9 million. In July 2023 it laid off 62 of its 69 employees, leaving only 7. Its stock was delisted from Nasdaq in October 2023 after falling below the $50 million market-cap requirement and failing to file its 10-Q. On December 8, 2023, Tempo Automation Holdings and an affiliate filed voluntary petitions for liquidation under Chapter 7 in Delaware.
