Rise Education
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Rise Education (RISE, 瑞思学科英语) was a Beijing-based after-school English tutoring company founded in 2007 and backed by Bain Capital. Listed on Nasdaq (ticker REDU), it ran offline English training for primary students across China and had raised $550 million. It was one of the major players in China's private K-12 tutoring industry.
02 / Rise Education FAILURE REASONS
Why it failed
In July 2021, China's 'double reduction' policy banned for-profit after-school tutoring in core curriculum subjects (including English), required such institutions to register as non-profits, banned foreign ownership and limited tutoring on weekends, holidays and vacations. The regulation destroyed Rise's business model overnight: revenue plunged and the company went from profit to loss. With no path forward for the education business, the company sold off its operating assets at the end of 2021.
