Mahalo
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Mahalo was a Santa Monica web directory and human-powered search engine launched in May 2007 by serial entrepreneur Jason Calacanis. Human editors hand-crafted search result pages for popular queries, differentiating it from algorithmic engines like Google, and it later added the Mahalo Answers Q&A service and how-to guides and videos. Backers included Sequoia Capital's Michael Moritz, Elon Musk, News Corporation, Mark Cuban and Ted Leonsis. At its peak the site reached 15 million monthly unique visitors.
02 / Mahalo FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Mahalo's fatal flaw was dependence on the company it set out to beat: it relied on Google for the traffic that funneled to its pages, then raced with Demand Media and other content farms in a quantity-over-quality model that Google's 2011 Panda update punished overnight. Traffic and revenue collapsed; Calacanis immediately laid off half his staff. A pivot to mobile education videos on the iPad could not restore the business, and in 2014 Calacanis announced Mahalo would enter server sunset as he moved on to the Inside app. The site has since gone dark.
