Vreal
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Vreal was a Seattle-based virtual reality game-streaming platform founded in 2015. Its technology let streamers share the entire 3D environment of the VR world they were playing in, so viewers could walk around the streamer as avatars, explore the game world on their own as passive observers, or watch a rendered 2D view without a headset. The company positioned itself as the Twitch of VR, working with VR titles and creators to build tools for immersive game broadcasting.
02 / Vreal FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Vreal's own farewell message said it plainly: the VR market never developed as quickly as hoped, and the company was ahead of its time. The product was built for a tight niche - streamers with VR hardware broadcasting for viewers with VR hardware - and its insistence that VR hardware was the only real way to experience the content kept its audience tiny. An experimental browser view added in mid-2019 came too little, too late. With slow adoption and the typical 18-month funding runway exhausted after its Series A, the company shut down.
