Onkyo
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Onkyo, founded in Osaka in 1946 by Takeshi Godai ('onkyo' means 'sound acoustics' in Japanese), was a storied Japanese audio electronics maker. It built speakers, AV receivers, CD players and other hi-fi components sold under the Onkyo and Integra brands, and in 2015 it bought Pioneer's home AV business.
02 / Onkyo FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Onkyo was squeezed by the structural decline of the mid-range hi-fi market: smartphones and streaming killed the middle segment, while the shift from physical media to internet-connected listening changed how people consumed music. A failed sale to Sound United in 2019, worsening cash flow and the pandemic-era semiconductor shortage - which blocked both new product launches and its OEM manufacturing business - compounded the decline. The company sold off its AV business in 2021 but could not survive on what remained.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Founded
Onkyo was founded in Osaka by Takeshi Godai and became one of Japan's best-known audio brands.
- Rescue deal falls through
The agreed sale of Onkyo's AV business to Sound United collapsed; in 2020 Onkyo USA shut down its US distribution.
- Delisted and asset sale
Onkyo was delisted from the Tokyo Stock Exchange for negative net worth; in September 2021 it sold its home AV business, including the Onkyo and Integra brands, to a Sharp-Voxx joint venture for $30.8 million.
- Bankruptcy
On May 13, 2022 Onkyo Home Entertainment filed for bankruptcy in the Osaka District Court with total liabilities of about 3.1 billion yen (about $24 million), ending 76 years of the company; the Onkyo and Integra brands live on under the Sharp-Voxx joint venture.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
At the bankruptcy filing, Onkyo Home Entertainment reported total liabilities of about 3.1 billion yen (about $24 million); its attorney attributed the collapse to a shrinking market and an oversized business.
- 02
About 500 creditors were involved, including roughly 250 consumers whose crowdfunded pre-orders were never delivered.
- 03
The Onkyo and Integra brands and product lines were already owned by the Sharp-Voxx joint venture and were unaffected by the bankruptcy; the joint venture later bought the remaining assets.
