NK.pl
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
NK.pl was Poland's homegrown social network, originally launched as Nasza Klasa ('Our Class') on November 11, 2006, by four computer science students from the University of Wrocław. Built to help Poles reconnect with old school friends, it became the introduction to the internet for large swaths of the country: at its 2008–2011 peak it had nearly 40 million unique users and was visited by more than 50% of Polish internet users each month. Ringier Axel Springer Polska bought it in November 2014. On May 26, 2021, the company announced NK.pl would close, effective July 27, 2021.
02 / NK.pl FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
NK.pl was killed by two forces: Facebook and its own missteps. In June 2010, a rebranding accompanied by new terms of use that demanded users let the portal commercially use their profile photos and private information triggered a mass exodus. Facebook — global, mobile-ready, and trusted — absorbed the fleeing users; by August 2014 registered users had fallen from about 14 million to under 7 million. Ringier Axel Springer Polska bought the portal in 2014, but the decline continued: roughly 2 million accounts remained at closure. After 15 years, the company announced the end in May 2021.
