Coqui
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Coqui was a German open-source speech AI company that spun out of Mozilla's Machine Learning Group in 2021 (the group behind DeepSpeech, Common Voice, and TTS). It built battle-tested open-source speech toolkits: Coqui STT for speech-to-text and Coqui TTS - the widely-used open-source text-to-speech platform whose XTTS models (cloning a voice from a ~6-second clip, 17 languages, local deployment) pushed the state of the art. It also launched the Coqui Studio web app and API, winning its first paying customers in 2023. The company shut down in January 2024; its code lives on in the community-maintained fork idiapp/coqui-ai-TTS.
02 / Coqui FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors supported by the current evidence
Co-founder Josh Meyer’s post (written Jan 2024; published 30 Jul 2026) states Coqui shut down because it never hit product-market fit, compute and talent were expensive, and the funding climate was tough: open-source downloads did not become revenue, so the company could not close a new round. He also cites GTM/legal delays with AAA game studios and commoditization of generative-voice APIs.
Meyer: never hit product-market fit; millions of downloads did not translate to millions in revenue.
Compute and talent were expensive.
Tough funding atmosphere; creating the most popular open-source voice AI was not enough to close a new round.
