01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Grow Mobility was a Latin American micromobility giant formed in January 2019 by merging Mexico's Grin (a Y Combinator-backed e-scooter startup founded April 2018) with Brazil's Yellow (a dockless bike-share startup founded in early 2018 by 99 ride-hailing co-founders Ariel Lambrecht and Renato Freitas with bike-industry veteran Eduardo Musa). The combined company ran more than 135,000 bikes and scooters across six countries with 1,100+ employees, after the two startups jointly raised about $150 million — including Yellow's $63 million Series A (September 2018, led by GGV), then the largest Series A in Latin American history.

02 / Yellow (Grow Mobility) FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Grow never found a sustainable business model: the capital-intensive scooter wars burned cash, unit economics stayed negative, and the 2020 pandemic crushed ridership. In June 2020 the company was acquired by investor Felipe Henriquez — effectively a distressed sale ending its run as an independent company.
