01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Nettrix was a Chinese manufacturer of AI servers and high-performance computing systems. It was formed by former executives of Sugon, China's supercomputer maker, after the United States placed Sugon on its Entity List in 2019 — building on Sugon's technology and customer base, it became one of China's largest AI server manufacturers within six months. Its business partners included NVIDIA, Intel, and Microsoft. In March 2025 the US Bureau of Industry and Security added Nettrix itself to the Entity List, barring American companies from doing business with it without a government license.

02 / Nettrix FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Nettrix's business model depended on acting as an unlisted offshoot of sanctioned Sugon, buying advanced US chips before American authorities caught on. After the arrangement was publicly exposed in 2024, the US added Nettrix to the Entity List in March 2025 for its role in developing exascale supercomputers for military end use. The listing cut the company off from its American suppliers and customers — NVIDIA, Intel, and Microsoft — removing the chip supply its AI server business depended on.
