Hycan Auto

The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.

01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Hycan (合创汽车) was a Guangzhou electric-vehicle maker launched as the GAC-NIO joint venture on April 10, 2018 (renamed Hycan in April 2021). Its first product, the Hycan 007 SUV, launched in 2019 with a 15,000-unit 2020 sales target but managed only 631 units in the first 11 months of 2020. Nio's stake was diluted from 2020 and it withdrew completely in 2022; Guangdong Pearl River Investment became the largest shareholder (68.56%). On January 11, 2025, GAC Group disclosed it was solving Hycan's employee placement issues and GAC Aion would take over after-sales service — Hycan was confirmed substantially defunct.

02 / Hycan Auto FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Hycan never found product-market fit: its mass-produced model was poorly received, sales collapsed, and key partner Nio progressively withdrew from the venture. By late 2024 only a few dozen employees remained, with over 100 lawsuits filed against it as a defendant that year; workers protested over unpaid refunds on forced employee stock-ownership plans. Starved of capital and credibility, the company was wound down in early 2025.

03 / EVENT HISTORY

Events in the structured record

  1. Operations ended

NBD (13 Jan 2025) on GAC (601238) board announcement ~10 Jan 2025: pro-rata shareholder loans (~RMB 23.8M from GAC/Aion at 25% stake) for wages/severance; GAC Aion entrusted to take Hycan product aftersales with up to RMB 174M pro-rata aftersales loan. Huxiu/China Business Journal frame as brand reaching its end / '终于倒下'—parent shutting/settling a failed unit, not a going-concern strategic sale.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN

How the factors connect

  1. 01

Do not assume two brands make one product: GAC handled R&D/production while Nio handled tech — and neither owned the consumer outcome.

  2. 02

Sell the car before selling the company vision: 631 units against a 15,000 target should have triggered a pivot, not more fundraising.

  3. 03

Treat employees as creditors, not piggy banks: forced stock-ownership schemes ended in protests when layoffs came.
