Sycamore
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Sycamore was a Y Combinator Winter 2017 startup founded by George Lawrence and Justin Mares - a marketplace where any company could 'add a delivery driver in 5 minutes.' Targeting retailers and restaurants that needed immediate delivery capacity but lacked the volume to negotiate carrier contracts or the capital for a full-time fleet, Sycamore pooled on-demand drivers and took a 14 percent commission. Three weeks after launch it had completed 640 jobs with 2x weekly growth. The Y Combinator directory now lists Sycamore as Inactive; the company shut down in February 2018, less than a year after YC.
02 / Sycamore FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
No founder post-mortem for Sycamore was published, so the causes below are informed reading, not the founders' account. Sycamore entered a winner-take-all logistics market - on-demand last-mile delivery - as a thinly funded startup against rivals like UberRUSH and DoorDash Drive that were subsidizing losses to buy market share. The two-sided B2B marketplace needed subsidized liquidity on both sides (drivers and merchants) to function; Sycamore's unit economics were negative at its scale, and it lacked the war chest to bridge the gap between supply and demand. Shut down in February 2018.
