01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Open Motors (formerly OSVehicle), based in Palo Alto, developed a modular open-source electric vehicle platform that enabled businesses and startups to design, prototype and build electric vehicles and transportation services. Its TABBY chassis was an industrializable, production-ready open-source platform shipped as a flatpack that could be assembled in under an hour, aimed at democratizing mobility with a target vehicle price below $10,000; the company later worked on EDIT, a self-driving white-label vehicle platform. It raised about $120,000 from Y Combinator and Plug and Play.
