Din
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Din was a smart home-cooking startup that helped people recreate restaurant dishes at home in under 20 minutes. It positioned itself as a smarter alternative to meal kits, bringing restaurant-quality cooking into home kitchens. The service shut down in 2016.
02 / Din FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors supported by the current evidence
Cofounder Emily LaFave Olson told Eater SF that Din changed its model to try to become profitable but could not; she cited a crowded market and a shift in funding, and said unit-economic profitability did not cover team overhead at the company's scale, and no buyer was found.
Founders said they could not make the business profitable and healthy for the long term; scale did not offset total operational overhead despite unit-economic profitability.
LaFave Olson named a crowded market as a reason for the closure.
She also named a shift in funding; a founder Medium post (27 Oct 2016, opened) added they had very little funding left to reach profitability.
