Chillabit
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Chillabit was a social networking app designed to connect college students with their peers in a fun, social way. Students could share thoughts, questions and stories through the app, creating an online community around their university or college campus. Founded in 2015 and based in Edmonton, Canada, it raised about $120,000 across accelerator and early-stage rounds in 2016. PitchBook lists it as 'Out of Business' as of March 18, 2019.
02 / Chillabit FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
No public postmortem or shutdown statement from Chillabit's founders could be located, so only verifiable structural facts are documented. First, the product attacked the hardest category in consumer social: college-student networks are winner-take-all and incumbents (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and later TikTok) already owned students' attention — a campus-by-campus community app with no differentiated hook faced an almost impossible network-effects battle. Second, resources were minimal: about $120,000 raised is barely seed money, and a social app needs sustained marketing spend to seed each campus. Third, the product itself generated friction: in 2016 a widely shared user post warned that the app was consuming large amounts of cellular data in the background — a trust-damaging early signal for an app asking students to keep it on their phones. Without breakout traction or follow-on funding, the app wound down and is recorded as out of business as of March 18, 2019.

The Gateway (17 Apr 2019) reported that on 18 Mar 2019 the Chillabit team announced they were shutting down the anonymous campus social app after four years. The paper identified it as the former Chitter, founded in 2015 by University of Alberta students/alumni. Chillabit’s public Facebook page the same day posted that Chillabit was shutting down. Y Combinator lists Chillabit (W16, San Francisco) as Inactive.
