Monarch Tractor
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Monarch Tractor was an American agtech startup founded in 2018 by Carlo Mondavi, Praveen Penmetsa and former Tesla executive Mark Schwager, billing itself as the 'Tesla of agriculture'. Its MK-V was marketed as the world's first fully electric, driver-optional farm tractor, with a camera-first autonomy stack and by-wire systems, targeted at wineries, fruit farms and dairy farms. The company raised more than $220 million over eight years, including a $133 million Series C in July 2024 co-led by Astanor Ventures and a Foxconn affiliate. After a collapse marked by layoffs, dealer lawsuits and the loss of its Foxconn manufacturing partner, Monarch ceased operations in April 2026; its core autonomous technology assets were acquired by Caterpillar.
02 / Monarch Tractor FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Monarch's downfall combined hardware reality with strategy whiplash. The MK-V faced a brutal market: sales grew slower than expected, and in 2025 dealer Burks Tractor sued, alleging the tractors were defective and unable to operate autonomously as promised. Monarch lost its contract manufacturer Foxconn, co-founder Carlo Mondavi said he was pushed out after opposing CEO Penmetsa's software-first pivot, and the shift from building tractors to licensing autonomy software came too late: a November 2025 internal memo warned of up to 102 layoffs and a possible shutdown. Multiple rounds of layoffs — including 10%+ in November 2024 — plus departures of top talent left the company unable to execute the transition.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect

Monarch raised more than $220 million across eight years, including the $133 million Series C in July 2024. No audited loss figure with disclosed subject, period and basis was extracted from available coverage — the $220M+ is total capital raised, not loss; the April 2026 asset sale to Caterpillar was on undisclosed terms.
