01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Micro Meat was Mexico's first cultivated-meat startup, funded by Y Combinator in the summer of 2021. Founded by tissue engineer Dr. Anne-Sophie Mertgen (CEO) - whose postdoc work at Tec de Monterrey was paused by the pandemic - with ex-NASA, ULA and Blue Origin aerospace engineer Vincent Pribble joining as co-founder and CTO, the company positioned itself as a B2B infrastructure player for the cell-based meat industry: a scaffolding technology for cultivated-meat producers, which it claimed could increase yields 1000-fold and scale from grams to tonnes using biopharma-reactor-like processes. It produced a cultured pork product from its first prototype (100 grams in a minute), joined the Newchip accelerator in 2022, and raised $775,000 in total ($375,000 via YC in September 2021 and $400,000 in April 2022). PitchBook records it as out of business on December 29, 2023.

02 / Micro Meat FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Micro Meat died of undercapitalization in an industry that punishes capital-light players. Its B2B-scaffolding thesis was that cultivated meat could not scale without infrastructure suppliers - but the industry-wide funding freeze in 2022-2023 starved precisely the early-stage, pre-revenue companies like Micro Meat that would be its customers. Having raised only $775,000 - against Israeli competitor Future Meat raising $347 million - it never secured the seed round it was pursuing, and without customer revenue or deep reserves it folded, recorded out of business on December 29, 2023. The same drought later killed better-funded peers including SCiFi Foods, Meatable and Believer Meats, confirming that Micro Meat was an early casualty of a sector-wide capital winter rather than a uniquely flawed technology.
