The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Style Code Live was Amazon's QVC-like livestreamed shopping show, launched in March 2016 - Amazon's first livestreamed show and its first foray into live video content. Streaming 30 minutes a day, five days a week, style experts (hosts Lyndsey Rodrigues, Rachel Smith, and Frankie Grande) shared fashion and beauty tips while shoppers could instantly buy the featured products. It was an experiment in whether Amazon could reproduce the influencer-driven sales power of YouTube stars. Just ahead of Memorial Day weekend 2017, the show aired its final program; staff were kept on through July with pay to wind things down.
02 / style code live FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
Style Code Live never found its footing. The experiment assumed a produced, Amazon-hosted show could borrow the sales influence of social-media stars, but the show skipped the influencer audiences that actually drive livestream commerce. Amazon's own team later said the lesson was that a 'warm audience' matters: you need influencers to bring their own followers. After the cancellation, the team pivoted to democratizing the process - exposing Amazon Live to creators so more viewing opportunities would drive higher engagement and repeat visitors, instead of one studio show.
