01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Edyn was an Oakland, California smart-gardening startup founded in 2014 by Princeton ecologist and soil scientist Jason Aramburu, with product design by Yves Behar. Its solar-powered system took the guesswork out of gardening: a Wi-Fi-enabled Garden Sensor placed in the soil monitored light, humidity, temperature, soil nutrition, and moisture, streamed the data to a smartphone app with planting and fertilizing recommendations, and wirelessly triggered the Edyn Water Valve to irrigate only when plants needed water — claimed to save growers about 37% on water. The company went through Y Combinator, raised over $1.75 million by early 2015, and ran commercial-agriculture pilots with Climate Corp and Anheuser-Busch InBev.
