01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Yahoo Groups was one of the internet's largest message-board systems, launched by Yahoo in 2001 by combining its Yahoo Clubs with the acquired eGroups. It hosted millions of discussion groups on every conceivable topic. Long neglected and overtaken by Reddit, Facebook Groups, and Google Groups, it was wound down by Verizon — which had bought Yahoo in 2017 — and shut for good on December 15, 2020.

02 / Yahoo Groups FAILURE REASONS

Failure reasons

Verizon cited 'a steady decline in usage over the last several years': the service had lost its user base to newer platforms, no longer fit Verizon's media strategy, and a controversial 2019 purge — which deleted all site content and blocked archiving — eroded what trust remained. After disabling new posts in October 2019 and deleting all content that December, Verizon pulled the plug entirely in December 2020.

How the factors connect

  1. 01

  3. 03

The site was taken offline on December 15, 2020; no financial terms were involved.

  4. 04

No loss figure was disclosed for the shutdown; loss_amount is left null.
