Iddiction
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Iddiction was a Menlo Park app-discovery startup founded in 2011 by Outfit7's founding CEO Andrej Nabergoj. Its flagship product Xplode connected apps into a cross-promotion network so developers could get quality users for free, and its App-o-Day property later absorbed the Calgary caption app I'd Cap That. Backed by Comcast Ventures, Highland Capital Partners, IDG Ventures, Signia Ventures and Felicis Ventures, it employed about 25 people.
02 / Iddiction FAILURE REASONS
Failure factors supported by the current evidence
The available evidence on why Iddiction closed is thin. A failure archive catalogs the company's 2014 shutdown with competition as the cause, and the market context supports that reading: app discovery in 2011–2014 was a brutally crowded field, with every cross-promotion network fighting over the same developers and inventory. Iddiction raised meaningful seed capital and built real products, including Xplode and the App-o-Day property, but never established a durable position against rival discovery networks. The site and apps eventually went dark, and no postmortem or acquirer was ever announced.

04 / CONTEMPORARY REBUILD ASSESSMENT

Overall assessment: Not completed
05 / CAUSAL CHAIN
How the factors connect
- 01
Cross-promotion networks die when supply and demand are the same users
- 02
Raising from brand-name VCs does not buy distribution
- 03
Acquiring small apps fills the content gap but not the moat gap
- 04
In app discovery, crowded means dead: pick a side or pick a niche
