01 / WHAT IT BUILT

What the company did

Kenko Health was a Mumbai-based insurtech startup founded in 2019 by Aniruddha Sen and Dhiraj Goel, two veteran insurance professionals. It offered subscription-based health plans that covered outpatient department (OPD) benefits, medicines and healthcare products - the roughly 75% of lifetime healthcare expenses that traditional Indian health insurance does not cover. Backed by Beenext and Peak XV Partners with about $13.7 million raised, it grew revenue from 5 crore rupees in FY22 to 85 crore rupees in FY23.

05 / CAUSAL CHAIN

How the factors connect

  1. 01

In June 2024 the founders told employees Kenko Health had run out of funds and was unable to infuse equity capital in time.

  2. 02

The company was taken to the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) by a debt fund that had extended it a loan.

  3. 03

Its singular focus for a year - securing an insurance licence from the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) - failed; regulatory scrutiny intensified and IRDAI required applicants to be backed by a large domestic investor.

  4. 04

In August 2024 Kenko Health shut shop and closed its Bengaluru and Mumbai offices.

  5. 05

The founders blamed IRDAI red tape for the shutdown; investors had also balked at the equity dilution in a planned domestic-lead investment deal.
