01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Opez was a Y Combinator 2011 (S11) startup, co-founded by Paul Chou and Chris Tam. Dubbed 'Yelp for service professionals', it attacked a real problem for independent service workers such as hairstylists, bartenders and DJs: when they moved between venues, they couldn't take their clientele with them. Opez let users find service professionals, see where they worked, leave reviews, and follow them; professionals got their own branded business cards and could push promotions and coupons to followers.
