01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Qkids (久趣英语), founded in 2015 in Xiamen, was an online English-learning platform for children, connecting young learners with English teachers via live video. It raised about $100 million and grew to 500-1,000 employees, becoming one of China's larger online English-education brands alongside VIPKid, GoGoKid and DaDa.
02 / Qkids FAILURE REASONS
Why it failed
In July 2021 China's 'double reduction' policy banned for-profit curriculum-based tutoring and the hiring of foreign-based tutors for Chinese students, wiping out the core business model of online English platforms. Like peers (GoGoKid suspended classes Aug 5, 2021; VIPKid stopped selling foreign-taught courses; DaDa closed Jan 2022), Qkids lost its Chinese student market and continued only with a much smaller base of non-China students.
03 / EVENT HISTORY
Events in the structured record
- Founded
Qkids founded in Xiamen as an online children's English platform.
- Policy shock
July 2021 'double reduction' policy barred for-profit K-12 tutoring and foreign-based tutors; Qkids' core China business collapsed and the company continued only with fewer non-China students.
- Peers exit
By early 2022, peers DaDa, GoGoKid, SayABC, Landi and others had fully shut down; Qkids remained in reduced operation for students outside China.
