Synergist
The business, the turning points, and the decisions behind them.
01 / WHAT IT BUILT
What the company did
Synergist was a Berlin-based contract negotiation platform, one of the first of its kind, founded in 2015 and led by Australian Ed Taylor (founding CTO Mladen Stific). Its online contract negotiation capabilities were offered as an integration with Thomson Reuters' Contract Express, letting customers send generated documents to recipients and counterparties through its platform. In 2017 it joined the first cohort of MDR LAB, the legal-tech incubator, and received a EUR 1 million innovation subsidy from Berlin's state development bank IBB. In 2018 it signed a business partnership with Thomson Reuters. Then it went quiet - and by early 2021 it had apparently closed down under mysterious circumstances, with no announcement ever made.
02 / Synergist FAILURE REASONS
Failure reasons
No public account of why Synergist closed was ever published - not even a farewell post, which is why Artificial Lawyer called the circumstances 'mysterious.' What is on record: a young Berlin legal-tech startup that peaked around 2017-2018 (MDR LAB cohort, EUR 1M IBB subsidy, Thomson Reuters partnership) quietly vanished while direct competitors in the same contract-negotiation space, such as Juro, kept growing. The familiar legal-tech trap applies - long enterprise sales cycles, a partnership that didn't include Thomson Reuters actually marketing the product, and a market where a handful of winners consolidate. But without any statement from the founders, that remains informed reading, not fact.
